Why The Need

The founding premise of The Wine Trust remains true today: the greatest Bordeaux wines must be aged for many years under ideal cellar conditions before they can be thoroughly enjoyed as their creators intended.  And the utmost care, patience and understanding are required to achieve this perfection. These wines, much more than their New World counterparts, require the long passage of time under ideal conditions before they develop the complexity, glorious flavor nuances and grace for which they are famous.

Along with optimum soil and weather conditions, fine wines need expert care and dedicated attention during the entire process of growing, harvesting, vinification and bottling. These functions have always been, and remain, the responsibility of the vintner.  However, for great wines to truly achieve their peak potential, the same dedicated care and attention is needed once they leave the chateau until you are ready to enjoy them at your table.

In the past, the nurturing and storage of fine wines — when bottled and up to maturity — was handled by traditional wine merchants, or negociants... frequently family firms with deep roots in the region. But times and conditions changed.  Storage and carrying costs rose. Prices of the finest wines increased dramatically and became subject to periods of wide instability. Many of the old family firms were forced to close down. Those that remained could no longer afford to carry large stocks of expensive wines for the long periods required.

Recognizing these early changes in what has become an increasingly capital constrained and short-term focused supply chain, the Bakal family created THE WINE TRUST® in 1973 for the purpose of holding our great wines, in a proper and appropriate manner, until they were finally ready for consumption in their prime.

For the past thirty-five years, it has been the charge and responsibility of The Wine Trust to provide this ultimate standard of care for the greatest wines of Bordeaux.

Following the age-old tradition of European family collections, The Wine Trust has been committed to these key principles:

* To only purchase age-worthy wines and only during the most outstanding vintages

* To acquire directly in Bordeaux, "en primeur" from reputable negociants and suppliers

* To ensure single ownership and superior provenance by allowing wines to rest undisturbed, under ideal conditions, until they mature

* Keep shipping to an absolute minimum, and only under carefully controlled conditions

* Offer wines for sale when they reach their peak drinking window and can provide their most profound consumption experience
