Overall Climate and Geography

The mild climate of Bordeaux is ideal for making world-class wines. The vineyards of Bordeaux are moderated and heavily influenced by their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Gironde estuary at its heart. The growing season is generally warm with only sporadic rainfall. Harvest time is usually hot and ideal for ripening the grapes to maturity. The region is generally broken down into two areas: the Left Bank to the west of the Garonne River and Gironde Estuary and the Right Bank to the east of the Dordogne River and Gironde Estuary. The Left Bank contains the Medoc and Graves regions, with the best sites on well-drained gravelly soils. The Right Bank contains the Pomerol and St-Emilion regions, with the best sites on more calcareous and clay soils.
