Chateau Palmer Tasting Dinner at Per Se

Category Wine - 05/07/2009     Posted by Brian Mota

When our friend and Château Palmer's Director of Development, Bernard De Laage De Meux, agreed to co-host The Wine Trust's long-awaited 35-year history commemorative tasting dinner, his first words were "The Château would be more than pleased to supply the wines, but Brian, could you please just promise to choose someplace fresh and interesting...PLEASE?!?"

When you combine six of the most outstanding vintages of Chateau Palmer from the past three decades with a customized five course tasting menu prepared by the amazing chefs of Per Se, along with a few cases of 1999 DP donated by John Kapon of Acker Merrall...and the gracious commentary and insider's history as only Bernard can present... you get one exceptional evening.

The following libational delights were poured in abundance....

2005 Alter Ego, 2000 Palmer, 1998 Palmer, 1995 Palmer, 1989 Palmer, and my personal favorite 1983 Palmer...

I would very much like to share (not to mention taunt) you with the marvelous meal presented to us that evening.  A perfectly shaped hollowed egg shell filled with white truffle custard with black truffle ragoût began our eating-fest.  This tiny scrumptious delight was served with the 2005 Alter Ego, and it was delicious.   Then came the pasta!  But what pasta it was!  Mascarpone agnolotti with butter poached Oregon morels and wilted ramps served with the 2000 Château Palmer.  After hearing first hand about the terrior, grapes and procedures of Château Palmer, which go into growing and producing their wine, it was time for the two next courses, Pekin duck breast, then lamb with heirloom carrots and petite.  The duck was paired with the 1998 and 1995 vintages.  The lamb was accompanied by the 1989 and 1983 vintages.   So good, so decadent.  This meal was crowned by a desert of pineapple compote, mascarpone sherbet with warm vanilla froth and a lovely, mellow glass of 1989 d'Yquem from The Wine Trust.  We all needed naps then an afternoon at the local gym.

To say the least, a good time was had by all!
